Your life is totaled

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)

When I was 17 years old I began to save money for a truck. I had been driving my dad’s truck for a couple of years and I wanted to move our soon, so I realized that I needed my own vehicle. I worked and saved and over a period of a few months I managed to collect $600. Not long after that I noticed a truck with a “for sale” sign on it parked on a corner near my house. I contacted the owner and we made a deal. I was the proud owner of my very own truck. In hindsight it was pretty ugly and fairly old, but to me it was beautiful, and it represented freedom and adulthood. I loved my truck. Ten days later I got distracted as I was driving, and I drifted into an olive tree at 50 miles per hour. After I had recovered from my injuries, I went down to check on my truck at the wrecking yard. It was in pretty bad shape. The man from the junkyard came out and confirmed my fears. He said, “I’m sorry to tell you this, son, but your truck is totaled.” What he was telling me was my truck couldn’t be fixed. There was nothing I could do. “Your truck is totaled.” remembering that day is still painful. The Bible tells us that we have a comparable problem as human beings. the problem is called sin. our sin nature as human beings is something that confronts all of us and it’s something we can’t fix ourselves: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). “All have turned away, they have together become corrupt; there is no one who does good, not even one” (Psalm 14:3). My life is totaled and I can’t fix it. If you’re living without Christ, the according to the Bible your life is totaled too. THis is what God’s Word tells us about sin.
